Jawahar Lal Nehru

As we know Jawahar Lal Nehru was the first prime minister of India. He was a brilliant, charismatic and introspective man with a complex character. Nehru's vast popularity, strong will, energy and pride allowed him to be a benevolent despot once he was in power.
He had Cancer rising at 23O10’34”. The Moon was in Cancer at 17O53’10” in the first charan of Aslesha constellation.
A person born in Cancer is sensitive, nervous, and restless. Such a person is bright and intelligent. He is self reliant and unbending. He would support justice and fair play.
Nehru had the Moon in his ascendant. It made him an idealist and successful with the masses. Sociability was his strong characteristics. It made him elegant and of charming personality.
His Moon was in the first charan of Aslesha. The Moon in this constellation is generally not good except when it is in its first charan. Such placement of the Moon gives respect in society, high intellectual calibre and wealth.
The ascendant is strong as its owner is in the sign. The Moon is also strong being in the middle of its own sign.
This gave him exceptional strength of character and self confidence. A strong ascendant is the first prerequisite for an individual to reap good effects of other good yogas (planetary combinations) in the chart.
Nehru had Ketu in the sixth house from his Moon. This is a combination for ruling powers and high status.
The Moon in the twelfth house from Saturn caused many changes in his life. A strong Cancer which is ninth from natal Sun indicates a powerful and prosperous father.
The high status he enjoyed in his profession is seen from the house Saturn occupies from the natal Sun. This was destined as seen from the position of Saturn from his natal Jupiter.
His married life was short and mostly unhappy as is seen from placement of Mars in an inimical sign in the third house.
Mars owns the fifth house. It occupies the third in an inimical sign. The Sun occupies the fifth. This is a combination for a feeling of inadequacy and unhappiness relating to children.
His fourth and tenth houses are strong showing comfortable life, many vehicles, good education, happiness from mother and a successful career.
The aspect of Saturn on Venus indicates inadequacy in marital happiness. Saturn owns the seventh house and occupies an inimical second house. Venus under aspect of Rahu shows some waywardness in sexual matters.
Mars in a sign of Mercury points to acts of authoring.
Rahu in the twelfth house could cause incarceration which happened to him in his life.

Death came when Saturn came to Satbhishaka constellation of Rahu in Aquarius which is his eighth house. Even a thousand healers could not save him.

Divisional Charts 4

He was madly in love with a girl. His marriage was fixed with her but the girl in June/July 2016 (major period of Rahu and sub-period of the Sun) refused to get married to him. He is unable to forget her.
Rahu projects aspect to the fifth house and it is associated with Venus. Therefore the individual will have a love affair in this major-period.
Saturn projects aspect to the eighth house and is therefore capable of causing disappointment and break. Ketu is in sambandh with Saturn.
Rahu will therefore cause a break and disappointment.
The Moon and Venus have exchanged signs. The Sun projects aspect to the fifth house and is associated with Saturn. It is in a constellation of the Moon. Hence the Sun will cause break in romance and unhappiness on that count.
Let us now come to the panchamsa. Rahu is debilitated in the ascendant of the divisional chart and it has the aspect of Saturn which projects aspect to the fifth house in this chart as well and the eighth.

The Sun is placed in a friendly sign but has the aspect of Saturn and Rahu.

Divisional Charts 3

This individual has had several car accidents in the major-period of Venus. He has now almost stopped driving.
He has had constant trouble with his car in this major-period.
Venus is the karaka for cars. It is also the major-period planet.
Shodashamsa is the divisional chart that refers to cars.
Venus occupies a sign of Mars in the birth chart. Mars is debilitated in the chart and owns the sixth and eleventh houses.
Venus is debilitated in the Shodashamsa and occupies the sixth house of trouble and accidents.

Divisional Chart 2

This is the chart of a female who got married on 20/January/1938 in the major-period of Rahu and sub-period of the Moon.
She suffered so much humiliation in marriage that she had a divorce in the major-period of Jupiter and sub-period of Venus on 17/November/1948.
Venus is at 12O44’4”. It is placed in the III house in Libra in the navamsha chart and therefore appears to be strong but it receives aspects from Mars, Saturn and Ketu. It is the karaka for marital life and it is the sub-period planet as well. Therefore marriage is likely to be unhappy and the trouble may come to a head in its sub-period.
Jupiter occupies the sixth house in the navamsha chart and it is debilitated there. It is associated with Saturn. Therefore the period of Jupiter is also likely to cause unhappy developments in marriage.
Navamsha chart is a chart that shows various facets of married life. A planet that occupies a bad house, is debilitated or it is under influence of naturally malefic planets such as Saturn, Mars, Rahu or Ketu in the navamsha chart is likely to cause unhappy developments relating to marriage.
Marriage suffers in the period of such a planet.
Thus we notice that the both the period planets are inclined to cause trouble in marriage. The conjunction of Jupiter, the owner of the eighth house in the navamsha chart and Saturn the owner of the seventh house in that chart points to a break in marriage.

Divisional Charts 1

The divisional chart is a great tool to analyse some specific aspects of human life. They are available for analysing siblings, luck, love and respect, accidents and illness, children, marriage, calamities, profession, gains and success, parents, vehicles, spiritual attainments and learning.

Parashar says that all aspects of life can be analysed with the help of akshavedamsa and shastiamsa charts. The former is a chart with 1/45th division of a sign and the latter with 1/60th division.

There is difference of opinion over the method to analyse a divisional chart. Some are of the view that it can be done in the same manner as the birth chart; others feel that besides this there are specific methods too of doing so.

In this series on the divisional charts we will take up methods of analysing these charts but in the present write up we will discuss the analysis of the karaka (significator) for younger siblings, property, injury, and murder in the divisional chart. The karaka in question is Mars.

The D-3 (dreshkan) chart is based on 1/3rd division of a sign. It is the specific chart for siblings. The karaka for younger siblings is Mars and for elder it is Jupiter.

If in the D-3 chart Mars is debilitated, placed in an inimical sign, placed in VI, VIII or XII house of the chart, or is under influence of naturally malefic planets like Saturn, Rahu or Ketu it is very likely that the individual will face difficulties or unhappiness due to his younger siblings. If Jupiter is so placed it is likely that the individual will face trouble or unhappiness on account of his elder siblings. The quantum of trouble can be determined according to the degree of affliction to the karaka.

If Mars is placed badly as explained above in D-4 (chaturthamsa) chart the individual will have trouble on account of property. This chart is based on 1/4th division of a sign and it represents property. Mars is the karaka for it.

If Mars is placed badly as explained above in the D-6 (sastamsa) chart the individual could be prone to injuries or accidents. This chart is based on 1/6th division of a sign. The individual may have to under go surgeries or he may face litigation. This is the chart for these matters and Mars is the karaka for these.

The D-8 is the chart for calamities and murders. It is based on 1/8th division of a sign. If Mars is badly placed in this chart as explained above the individual may suffer from major or fatal accidents or he may be murdered.
We will notice that as Mars changes its position in a sign at birth it changes its position in the divisional charts and affliction to it alters. Therefore if Mars is placed in a sign in the birth chart it is not necessary that it would give similar results to all who have Mars in that position. The effects of Mars will change according to the degrees that it occupies in a sign.
Suppose Mars occupies Cancer at 27 deg 13 min 37 sec in a chart. It will be in Pisces sign in the D-3 chart and would be good for the younger siblings unless it is placed in the VI, VIII or XII house in the D-3 depending on the ascendant of the divisional chart or suffers from adverse influence in it.
Similarly, it will be in Aries in the D-4 chart and good for property unless it has incidental disabilities described above.
It would be in Pisces in D-6, and in Scorpio in D-8 and favourable to the individual.
Mars is thus debilitated in the birth chart yet it does not disturb its significations.
In the next article we will pursue the placement of other karakas in the divisional charts.

TRANSITS 2

Planets keep travelling through the zodiac constantly. They influence various natal points during their movement. These natal points are the natal positions of planets in any given chart. They also pass through various houses and project aspects to them. In this manner they influence the houses in a chart. Their relative positions from natal planets are also important to find out their effect in transit.
Each chart has its own characteristics. The ascendants and positions of planets differ from chart to chart. Planets in transit move through the same signs for each individual but they do not give similar results to each individual. There is another very important reason for the effect of transits differing from one individual to the next. The transit of major, sub and inter-period planets are most important in a chart. If the time of birth is correctly recorded and the Vimshottari dasa time frame is correctly drawn up then the analysis of transit of each of major-period planet, the sub-period planet, and the inter-period planet would indicate the same event.
The transit of the major-period planet should be examined in the light of promise that it holds in the birth chart. An event can materialize in the transit of a major-period planet only if the major-period indicates it. The major-period of Saturn may indicate that the individual would go abroad during its major-period. We can then determine the span of time in which he would go abroad through analysis of movement of Saturn through the chart. If transit of Saturn shows the possibility of the person going abroad in a span of time but the major-period of Saturn in the chart does not hold out any such possibility then notwithstanding transit indications the individual will not travel abroad. Clearly, transits are totally subservient to the periods.
A major-period is analysed with reference to the ascendant and natal positions of planets in the chart. The major-period planet should be related to the karaka (significator) for the concerned event, to the concerned house and the same number of house from the natal position of the karaka (significator). For example, a major-period will indicate birth of a child if the major-period planet is related to Jupiter, the fifth house and the fifth house from natal Jupiter.
A sub-period is studied with reference to the place occupied by the major-period planet. Taking the above illustration further, the sub-period will show birth of a child if the sub-period planet is related to Jupiter, the fifth house from the place occupied by the major-period planet and the fifth house from Jupiter. The only distinction between the major-period and sub-period is therefore the consideration of the relevant house. Whereas for the major-period we take the relevant house from the ascendant, for sub-period we take it from the natal position of the major-period planet. The other two elements remain unaltered.
An inter-period is studied with reference to the natal position of the sub-period planet. The inter-period will indicate birth of a child if the inter-period planet is related to the karaka (significator) Jupiter, the fifth house from the natal position of the sub-period planet and the fifth house from natal Jupiter.
This is the reason why the effect of the sub-period of a planet in the major-periods of different planets differs. Barring a handful of cases when the sub-period of a planet gives similar results in different major-periods, the effects of sub-periods of the same planet in different major-period are different. We can say the same thing for the effect if inter-period.
It would be highly unusual to find two persons undergoing the same set of major, sub, and inter-periods with identical charts. Parashar has clearly stated that the chart should be analysed keeping the background, age, and ability of the individual. Therefore even when the same three periods are running for two individuals it is highly unlikely that both would be eligible for identical results. A child of ten years cannot expect a child but a man of 25 years can be an expectant father!!
We will take up the transit of the major-period planet in the context of real life charts in the next instalment.

TRANSITS 1

Analysis of a chart tells us the trends that would appear in the life of an individual. Whether a person would keep good health, he would have good education, he will marry well, he will have children, he will be prosperous, he will have good status in life, etc are questions that could be addressed through this analysis. This whets the appetite for more information. The consultant wishes to know the stages in life when these trends would manifest themselves over the years. Herein comes the use of Vimshottari dasa, transits and annual charts. Vimshottari dasa is a superb means to determine a span of time in which a happening could be predicted for an individual. Brihat Parashar Hora Shastra has given an array of dasas through which events in life could be fixed but many of these dasas are conditional. These dasas do not apply to all charts across the board. Some other dasas are difficult to apply. They need intricate calculations. Vimshottari dasa does not suffer from these drawbacks. It is easy to comprehend. It is easy to apply. Its results are consistently correct. These are the reasons why Maharshi Parasar himself has singled it out and has recommended it as the most appropriate one for our age. Vimshottari dasa gives us a span of time, usually of a few months, in which an event may occur. For closer approximation of time recourse is taken to annual chart and transits. An annual chart is the chart for a particular year. It depends on the movement of the Sun. A chart is drawn for the moment when the Sun reaches the exact location that it occupies in the birth chart and it is analysed for developments that are likely to happen in that year. The annual chart gives amazingly accurate results but it has to be read in conjunction with the birth chart. Events that are not indicated in the birth chart cannot happen even when the annual chart shows them. Transits are many a time taken in lieu of annual chart. Having determined the span of time for a particular happening in the life of an individual through Vimshottari dasa the astrologer takes up transits of planets in that span to determine the day when the event could happen. Transit therefore plays a great role in astrological analysis. It is an extremely useful tool and has been stated in many different ways. We need not get lost in the labyrinth of theory. We should stick to the methods that work and give results. The usefulness of any astrological concept lies in its applicability. An elegantly described concept is of no use if it does not work. There is a good number of such concepts but we need not be judgmental about them. Astrology need be a practical science and only those concepts should be propagated that work. This should be our sole criterion. In the next several instalments we will pursue the enquiry on these lines. To be continued......
